system.ini missing

By kristi ·
When I boot my Windows Me system I get to a screen that says system.ini file missing. I am then told to boot with a emergency boot disk and type scanreg/restore. When I do this it tells me it is a bad file or command. Any suggestions?

Are you putting a space between the "g" and the forward slash. WinME doesn't need system.ini to boot. Boot to safe mode and run msconfig and under the General tab select selective startup and uncheck system.ini. Reboot.

I'm a curious as to what happended to the original system.ini file? Did you delete it?

You should still be able to boot to safe mode. There's usually backups of the system.ini file. Look in c:\windows folder and there may be system.old or system.bak. Just rename the most recent one of them to system.ini.

There's a folder located in c:\windows\sysbckup, that has zipped files. The zipped files contain a copy of the system.dat, user.dat, system.ini and win.ini. Open the file with the most recent date and extract the system.ini file to c:\windows.
