Tablet XP Not Booting

By Farfignewton ·
We bought a used Toshiba Portege 3500 whose owner had loaded a boot copy of XP (and no, not Tablet XP); it has no CD drive. We tried to load SP2 to change it to a Tablet version, but it didn't work. My husband obtained a copy of an older version of Tablet XP and I somehow was able to overwrite the existing Windows by going into safe mode and somehow installing this older version. Everything was working find until I tried to reload SP2. Since it seemed to have frozen, I cancelled the download. I tried to reload SP2, but I could only remember go to the Update site where it downloaded 33 updates, SP2 not included in them. It asked to reboot and, since I'd tried to download IE6 w/o rebooting and it wouldn't let me, I figured it wouldn't let me download SP2 w/o rebooting. However, it seemed to go to Tablet XP, but then rebooted after a black screen. It looped like that until I used F8 to try safe mode. None of those options worked, either. I even went into BIOS to disable L1 and L2, but this made no difference, either, other than making Windows try harder to load. Any possible solutions w/o using a CD? Any possible solutions at all? Thank you!!!
