take a hard drive off line

Some told me that win2k has a routine/program/setting that will allow the operator to take a hard drive off line (put it to sleep) so that it can be taken out of the comptuer without having to shut down. I could not find anything in MS KB, or in the discussions.

anyone hear of this and how it is done?
