take a hard drive off line

By tech ·
Some told me that win2k has a routine/program/setting that will allow the operator to take a hard drive off line (put it to sleep) so that it can be taken out of the comptuer without having to shut down. I could not find anything in MS KB, or in the discussions.

anyone hear of this and how it is done?

There's no such feature in Win2000, nor would it be advisable to do in any OS.

When hardware is powered on, there's electrical current running through it. Even in hibernation mode, there's electrical current running though the computer (batteries on laptops drain in hibernation mode too).

When you reconnect the hdd, the computer should be powered off. If there's a connection made between two or more pins on the drive (with the computer powered on and instearting another drive), you may short out the controller.

There's regular sleep mode that places the hdd asleep after a certain (specificed) period of inactivity... but you should not physically remove the drive when the computer is powered on.

You may have heard about this with "hot swapable" drives in terms of servers, but that is a different situation. You have to have the controllers and the hardware must support this.

There are ways to do this on servers equipped with 'hot-swap' drive bays.

You can only perform a true hot-swap with a SCSI drive.

The routine you were told of is likely part of the drive controller driver for the system.

Sorry but Anna777 is wrong on this one.
It is possible if one of the following is true:
1. Your hardware supports hot swap (SCSIs usualy do) and you use software that is supplied by you Hard Drive mfg to puase the HardDrive I/O. However in most cases you can only do that for up to 90 seconds and the computer freezes for those 90 seconds. This is usualy enough to change a harddrive when you have RAID.
2. If you use Dynamic disk in Windows 2000, and everything on the physical disk is configured as a dynamic disk you can take it off if your hardware supports it and your computer is not accessing any files on those disk/s.
