Take away IPX

Removing IPX from a Novell 5 network: Is it possible, and if so how?

With recent changes we have made, IPX only seems to hinder, not help us. Our new routers don't natively route it and it takes up network bandwidth. We realize this can effect printer setup in Novell, but we found a way of printing IP to those instead. I'm interested in feedback on this move and any pointers on how to go about it.

Removing IPX can be fairly simple:

Make sure IP is bound and active on the server

Re-install the NW client software in "IP Only" mode.

Re-configure print servers to not use IPX

Some print servers can be set up as queue servers using onlyIP; others cannot. I've updated just about all our printing to NDPS -- works quite well over just IP.

Some software does require IPX, though. We have a commercial app the uses btreive that wouldn't run right under IP only until the pervasive client was removed and re-installed. Older versions of SyBase require IPX if the database server is hosted on NetWare.

Disable ipx on the server.
use INETCFG from the console, disable ipx from protocols submenu.
You may need to alter the autoexec.ncf file, rem out any ipx loading instructions

You will also need to remove ipx from the clients, and make sure ip is the only communication protol on the server and clients.
(as stated by the previous user answer)
