Take PMP Exam Prep Course?

By checker_chgo ·
Does anyone have an educated opinion on whether the PMP exam preparation courses are of any value to experienced project/program managers? While some of our project/program managers have many years of successful experiences, they will not have the official designation of PMP until they pass the exam. What do you recommend? Should they take a prep course first or simply read the PMBOK? Should they use prep book(s) instead?

Prep course

by JamesRL In reply to Take PMP Exam Prep Course ...

I've not written the exam(have written practise ones), but I know many who have.

The PMBOK is a good start. It lays the foundation of how PMI sees the PM process. While you have experienced project managers, they may be used to a different approach or a different set of terminology than that of PMBOK. The prep course will help them decide what to focus on and what to ignore.

I believe there is an educational requirement for XX training hours in the year you write the exam anyway - you might as well make it the prep course.

Some courses help

by pierre.aguilar7 In reply to Take PMP Exam Prep Course ...

Online courses do help giving you a solid base but you still have to read the PMBOK and do your ow homework. The one I've taken is a 53h online course through (called Skillsoft Basic and Advanced, 2 courses) and it covers the entire PMBOK. I have not started the Exam Test Simulations yet.
