Taking the next step in career development

    Locked

    by rtp2006 ·

I find myself at a crossroads in my career. I have been doing Helpdesk in an intense 24 x 7 work environment for 2.5 years. Although helpdesk has been great for learning the ropes I find myself wanting to take the next leap in my career as Systems Engineer. My background is nearly three years experience at the Helpdesk with an MCSE and CCNA as credentials. Unfortunately, I am the only user “support” person in our head office and it gets very busy. So this prevents me from getting a lot of exposure to projects and implementation task. I put my hand up at every opportunity even it’s on a weekend to gain next level experience.
What I am looking for is advice on how people made that leap out of the Helpdesk into the System Engineer role? How does someone not only secure this position but also ensure I am prepared and will do well at this role

      Switch employers?

Does your current employer have a job progression path for your position? Are there any potential opening at higher levels? Are you stuck where you are because you’re good at it and your supervisor doesn’t want to look for a replacement?

If there’s no chance for promotion where you’re employed now, look elsewhere.
