Targeting specific companies

Target Job or Company? Yes.

Here's what I know. Targeting will at least get you more interviews. I have never gotten a single interview applying online through the job boards (Monster, DICE, HotJobs, etc.). I've had very few interviews through
Headhunters or placement agencies. Most of my interviews came through either people I knew who knew of openings or targeting. I watched the job boards for openings posted by companies I'd like to work for. Then I utilized my contacts either in the company or try to find someone who KNOWS someone in the company. Unfortunately, there are two companies with openings that I would love to interview for but I have
zero contacts. One other has it set it up so that the ONLY way you can apply is to fill out their online formsand let the computer do the work. I have several contacts in this company - if the computer doesn't spit out a match - you don't get an interview. But it IS a great company in spite of it's idiotic HR practices.
Bottom line - I've been looking steadily for a year. I'm not willing to relocate because of my wifes position.
The economy hit the area pretty hard and it is just now starting to rebound... It's a tough world out there!

It sounds good in theory but don't know how to actually work on it. Take my example. I left my hometown a few years ago to find job in midwest. Now I am laid off like all IT people. I don't have a big network of people here. I contacted all my friends back home and all of them are in the same boat as I am. Now I have no real contacts to make. I can only job hunt vs targeting specific companies since I am desperate to find any job for survival vs choosing a good job.

Targeting - Blanket Search - Headhunters

I was laid-off Dec 28th 1995 (Merry Christmas and happy New years) - I did targeted search - blanket search - and headhunters. I had interviews from all three methods.

I have found that doing all three and covering all your bases works best. In the Networking organization I work with - we advise they use all four access - Targeted (Search websites and ads), blanket (send resumes to other companies even if they have nothing posted), Electronic (Monster, Hotjobs etc), Headhunters and networking.

We tell them its just like a salesman - only your selling yourself... if no one knows you are on the market - and what you can provide a buyer - then you sit on the shelves and collect dust.. You need to be using all the tools and marketing you can - the better you are at selling yourself - the better your chances are at landing a position. Be honest about your skills - and abilities and not to inflate them.. it only hurts you in the end ...
