taskmgr.exe missing from system tray

By Goofball ·
When I open task manager (Win XP Pro), I do not get an icon in the system tray. The task manager seems to be working fine otherwise.
Sometimes disabling and re-enabling it will make the icon show up, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes unlocking toolbar or unhiding inactive icons works, sometimes it doesn't....

As long as you open the task manager, a green icon will appear on the system tray. when you close the task manager, the icon goes. Since task manager is not Memory resident, it will only show when opened.

Yes, I understand that the icon is only supposed to show in the tray when taskmger.exe is actually running. The problem is that it doesn't show an icon in the sys. tray even when it is running, showing the task manager window or minimized.
I have ran all of the usual virus, adware, crapware, junkware and funkware removers. I can almost guarantee it's none of those.
I added a shortcut to taskmgr in the startup folder. That made it to work for all of three consecutive boots. Now it doesn't work any longer...again. I am no Windows novice by any means, but this one has got me stumped. The fact that it intermittently does work the way it should is the killer. I find no app. errors in the logs or any other indicators that there is a serious system issue. I've never had a PC that runs better otherwise.

Task Manager also appears to have another intermittent 'feature'.

Sometimes it just doesn't present the CPU-meter icon in the system tray. So when you select 'Hide on Minimise' it doesn't disappear to the icon, it disappears altogether. Relaunching, however, brings it back with recent history still displaying under Performance, proving that it never actually went away.

When you are suffering from this, 'Show icon in System Tray' is not even offered on Task Manager's menu. I never put my finger on it, but after 'a few reboots' you can have your icon option back again...

Kudos on offer for anyone who can explain why!
