Taskmon not responding

This problem started this morning on a Windows 98 machine. The computer just locks up and when you do Ctrl Alt Del, it will say that taskmon is not reponding. Any ideas on how to fix this? Is taskmon a required program for Windows? If not, I canremove it from the start up. ?
