Tech jobs in the S.E. US, Where ?

By slake47 ·
What are some good cities in the south eastern US to find a job?
I will have my MCSE & A+ by Dec. and have worked in the IT field for about a year at $10.00 an hr and am currently living in a small town in south FL. but I am willing to move.
The general concensus in FL is that it is hard to find a good paying job in the IT field with the potential for growth.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Sincerely, Steven Lake MCP

Tech Jobs in the SE

Atlanta is the obvious choice. It really is the Silicon Valley of the South. The cost of living is going to be a bit more than florida, but not enourmously slow. If you are bound to stay in Florida, I suggest Jacksonville. I lived there for 4 years and found that the market is growing, and is generally underserved.

My own opinions, of course.

North Carolina

I would also add Charlotte. Charlotte is very big on banking and it also has the headquarters and regional offices for many other companies, including Microsoft. The cost of living is a little less than Atlanta and the traffic is much better. :) There's also work in the RTP area.

I-85 corridor

by CharlieSpencer In reply to Tech Jobs in the SE

Anywhere along I-85 from Atlanta, through Greenville-Spartanburg, Charlotte, Winston-Salem-Greensboro, and into the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area.

I've heard good things about the major cities along I-40 from Asheville NC through TN to Memphis.

Avoid anywhere on I-95 between J'ville and Richmond.

RDentler, Are you a Yellow Jacket?

I was at Tech in the early 80's, and I really believe that Tech grads played a major part in making Atlanta "the Silicon Valley of the South". Based on feedback I get from friends there, it is the place to go for tech jobs. I also hear that the triangle in N.C. and Birmingham are hot.

Alabama

by jtakiwi In reply to Tech jobs in the S.E. US, ...

I know my company is hiring, even though we are small it shop (20 employees, 14 last year), we have hired four in the past three months, and will hire 3 or 4 more in the next 2 or 3 months I imagine. We are a Managed Service Provider (Outsourced IT) based in SW Alabama, not India. I've seen thr frustration from a different point of view, We've had a very hard time finding qualified people (about half we hire are entry level, we cannot hire experience locally it seems). In fact, today I am posting a job for a systems engineer in the 50K range, I know that job will be filled by someone outside of the area as most of the qualified people in this area already work for us or one of a couple of other employers. Our last two hires that were mid level in experience were imported from out of state as well. Good luck

IT in Florida

by ObiWayneKenobi In reply to Tech jobs in the S.E. US, ...

You're right, there's hardly anything here.

I live in the Tampa bay area (Pasco County) and 99% of the jobs I see when I'm looking are always in Tampa. Which doesn't help me since I'm going to school in Clearwater and I don't have enough experience to be relocated to Tampa (2-3 years isnt enough anymore, I suppose?)
