Tech Perspective: Network templates

By itdebate ·
Gartner recommends using a network strategy template as a framework to ensure a coherent, viable network infrastructure when organizations merge. Has your IT organization merged two networks, or is it in the process of merging? What preparations didyou make? What lessons did you learn from the experience? You can read the related Gartner article, which will be posted on 3 A.M. Monday, at http://www.techrepublic.com/article.jhtml?id=r00220001009ggp01.htm.

Tech Perspective: Network templates

This template is fine and would be a good example to follow in a perfect world. But in todays world of understaffed shops and ever increasing demands it is just not possible. The best one can hope for at times is to try and remember where you would like the network to go as in you are in the ceiling running cable. As an example I was notified on a Wednesday that we were expanding our operation to completely take over the building we were in. I was given a deadline of Tuesday to have the building wire and operational. On Friday we also began running the phone cables as the phone company could not provide anyone to support us on such short notice.
If you have the time by all means plan and develope a strategy.
