If the children have had no exposure to computers. First and formost, if the platform is Windows 98 must have the windows basics of “The Mouse.” Go over left click, right click, double click and click and drag. Then after going over the fundamentals of the mouse, have them play solitare!!!

      Hello Lee:

I have the perfect solution for you, since I’ve seen young children working with computers for quite a few years. You can start, even with toddlers, with a simple regular mouse that is just smaller – their fingers can click, and they also master the arrow keys and the space bar very early.

Two and three year olds like the painting options, like dragging a paint brush, tracking with dip and then swirling the colors. Ok, with the 4-5 year old, they can master learning a menu, and they can point and click on lots of icons, small words, making choices from menu’s. Mostly, they like action cars and cartoon stuff, (already severely impacted by the popular media choices, what ever they may be), but they also like picture stories, and some lettering, or words to us.

Then,6 to 7 and above, they can read, and they are whizzes. For regular elementary school-aged stuff, my son happened to learn a computer interaction/program called Logos, if I can remember correctly – since this was back in 1986. He could do age appropriate math problems, and actually had a project to input numbers of leaves and stones collected on a paticular walk over the course of the year – they were taught how to make their little enteries every day, then as time went on, there were simple display programs to chart the various progressive collection data. This was extremly ahead of their time for early technological intervention, HIP-HIP for Virginia schools! Hope this long discoursehelps, and is what you meant by “young children”.

      all the above and remember…

there are loads of fun games out there, that teach the kids basic mouse skills, Math, English and so on.

check with your local schools or education authority to see if they can recomend any.

I don’t know what you want to teach them, but here are some tips on technique from a hockey and soccer coach.

      – Keep it simple.
      – Keep it fun & interesting.
      – Make it relevant. Don’t use words like “processor”, use “thinker” or “brain” instead.
      – Make it hands-on

I work with early childhood through grade 5. Reader rabbit for the ec, k, 1,and 2. I also introduced the ec and kinders. to powerpoint. they really like this, you have a lot of writing but they can tell you the shades of colors and material to write. some are smart enough to write. I use the proper terms in technology, I find that I explain and use a lot of examles, but with the examples tehy understand the terms. lots of reteaching. they are not good with long term memory yet. Set high standards that they can meet, when they do, move the bar higher again. they try hard to meet the bar knowing they can reach it. don’t dummy the material for them but explain it in depth. you will find that they will grasp it, if they don’t they probably wasn’t interested.
they like to be entertanied, but they also need to be taught the “boring stuff too, don’t back off the boring stuff too, there are a few geeks that like that sort of stuff.
