Technology Plan

By brad_wilber ·
I am looking for a good template for a "Technology Plan".

Definition of a technology plan:

a) document which states a "high-altitude" operational goal for a business or company in regard to it's networking and data services

b) illustrates how to accomplish the stated goal using specific technologies and practices.

Any takers?

There are a number of IT "Strategic Plan" that have been posted for Universities and public funded institutions. While not great, Many have been developed at great expense by Big 5 consultant houses.

When I stared a strategic consulting practicefor a Management Consulting Co., I found that the Table of Contents provided some useful ideas for content.

More important that the deliverable, though is designing an IT strategic planning process that fits your business planning process. The documentation should be driven by the planning process that you select, not the other way around.

There is no "best practice" process for planning. Each company is different. There are some "health indicators" for the approach that you pick.
- Does it give everyone with P&L responsibility a chance to participate?
- Does it clean up ownership issues.
- Does it have a cash rationing process to balance spend across that portfolio?
- Is the rationing process backed by a risk analysis?- Does that plan get communicated clearly so that the leadership know why the plan is the best that can be put together.
- Is the owner of the plan clearly identified, so that it can be managed?

I have found that Mid - Cap, and large Cap Companies need to do planning at either three or two different levels.

Strategic Plan - Vision, Approach, Portfolio Review and Planning, Technology Initiatives, Risk Management, Key Business Initiatives, Action Plan Framework, etc.

Action Plans ? Business Initiative Analysis Technology, Application and Infrastructure Projects, Integration Improvement s, Network Management Improvements, etc.
