I am having some trouble feeling like I am out of the loop, with my telecommuting job. Does anyone have any ideas to close this whole?

      Telecommuting Isolation

      by webmaster ·

      In reply to Telecommuting Troubles

I’ve telecommuted off-and-on for various lengths of time and, yes, it can be lonely. It’s amazing how much of our time in the office is consumed by just talk. This becomes painfully apparent to the telecommuter, usually in about a week.

But, this isolation can also hamper your projects, never mind the social issues. So, here are some things i found myself doing (usually in about a week and 1 day)…

[] Encourage people to reply to your emails quickly
[] don’t feel bad about calling fellow employees on the phone if you have a question
[] keep the same hours as your colleagues (lunch, start-time, etc.)
[] try and use an instant messenger to communicate with colleagues (if you work in a tech savvy culture)

These pointers have alot to do with the flow of information between your house and the office. *Cultivate* good communication habits within yourself, but also within those upon whom you rely in the office.

Lastly, try and spend at least 1 day a week in the office, even if its just for a few hours. This alone will solve a lot.

      Discipline

… also one of the biggest problems i deal with when telecommuting wasn’t loneliness, but self-discipline.

Really, really watch your work habits. It’s easy to get distracted, and feel justified, while at home. Work out practices that minimizethe distractions.
