Telnet Connection using 2 XP (home and professional OS) machines

By don_khan ·
Hi,
I am new to networking side. I am trying to do the following exercise but I have no idea why its not working.
I have 2 laptops (one running XP home and other XP professional). I am trying to telnet from one pc to another (using internet). They are connected through a wireless network on same cable modem gateway. I can ping the IP gateway but I cannot ping the my laptop(s). It shows the error, request timed out. I think it has something to do with security. And due to my limited knowledge in this field I have no idea what to do next. The whole purpose of this exercise is to gain some knowledge on networks. I just want to see if I can remotely login into my laptop using my other laptop.

Help Pleaseeeeeee

re: telnet using XP home and XP pro

First, remember that XP home does not have the same network capabilities of XP pro. The Home computer may not be able to telnet at all, let alone through the internet. It wasn't designed for that. Pro, on the other hand, can do it.

Instead of telnet, try Remote Desktop. From the Home computer, you can ask for help and respond to it from the Pro computer, thus controling the Home computer. But, you can not do it the other way around.

<edit: Since this is an "excercise", I am purposely not telling you how to go about doing the remote desktop thing.>

telnet possible

Thanks for the response. I have no issues doing RD but the purpose of my exercise was to get more familiar with networking concepts (telnet). I did try to use telnet from my Laptop(s) and windows xp has an inbuilt telnet software. (if u type telnet on ur run window, u'll see what I am talking about.) Any exercise that you could suggest for telneting from my xp laptop to another or even ping exercise to see if they talk. I would really appreciate it. Thanks again for ur response.

Make sure that they are in the same workgroup. Hint! You should be able to RD from the home PC.
