I’m telnetting from my win2k workstation to a corellinux workstation and I can’t figure out how to get my terminal settings right.
-When in vi I can’t see the : prompt when exiting vi. I just have to go on instinct.
    -I also can’t backspace.
Alsocan’t log in as root remotely. I get incorrect login message. I know password is correct.

I can at least help you with the root login. Root cannot log in through Telnet. This is a security feature and should not be changed. If you want to log in as root, you should consider installing SSH. This will allow secure (encrypted) shell sessions to be opened.
I noticed the Win2K telnet client is not very configurable. You may want to consider getting another telnet client for your system. You can get one that supports SSH and then you won’t need telnet. I use SecureCRT and MKTS.- Steve

      One more thing.
You can telnet in as a normal user, and then do a su to root. Just enter the command: su
Then enter the root password. You will then be logged in as root. This is the best thing to do if you want to use telnet.

The keymapping problem is an issue between your telnet client and the system. If your session in VI works fine when you work on a virtual console on the Linux machine and not during the Telnet session, you should see of your telnet client allows keyampping. If not and you cannot resolve your problem, I would recemmend you try another telnet client.
