Temp User Account in Windows Vista

By dspaton ·
Hi,

I have seen 3 PC's recently exhibiting the similar problems. The problem is that when the user logs in to there own local account they have lost all thier docs and other settings and have a basic desktop.

On investigation it is found they have been logged into a temp account and there own settings & docs are still there but there if you browse to them

Has anyone else seen this or know the cause of this and how to fix it without reinstalling windows?

Thanks

Reg Edit

by bincarnato In reply to Temp User Account in Wind ...

Log on to an Account with Admin rights, then open Regedit and go to Registry Key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Once there, you will see the SID's listed for all of the profiles on the machine... Within the Key for each SID there is an entry called "ProfileImagePath" that will look like %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\UserName... Scroll through the SID's until you find the one with the screwy name (Like %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\CGraham7.2)...

Just edit the Key to remove the ".2", and it will point the user back to their old profile...
