Terminal Server Problem

By bfeltus ·
I have remote users connecting to our main site via T1. They access a particularly app using terminal services. For the past 2 days the users have been getting kicked out of the terminal server. They are receiving timeouts and the following error:

The connection to the remote computer was broken.
This may have been caused by a network error.

What steps and/or tools can I use to troubleshoot this.

Can the remote users PING the TS server when this happens? How is their connectivity to other resources across the T1? Can they still hit other machines?
Check the TS server Event Viewer logs for anything during the disconnect times.
Also, check your routers/switches, look at the interfaces and see if there are errors.
Do you run a bandwidth testing application like MRTG? You could use it to see if the T1 is being saturated, which would thereby cut off users.
What about a firewall? Do the users go through one? If so, it would also have logs you could look at.

hope this helps

If there are many users using using large files or performing large downloads, it could be due to the number of NIC cards.

If there is one NIC, it has to handle requests to the TS(terminal server), return the view back to each connected user, and get data located elsewhere back to them, per each user.

If the data flow to the NIC is max-ed out, connects may drop. Try installing a second NIC and have some users connect to the addded NIC.
