Test domains for trust relationships

By avachon ·
Hi, I have to set up two testing domains for a client so the person can test/learn about trust relationships. One small network is in place already - nt4.0, pdc and two clients - runs wins, dhcp and dns. Clients are attached to the pdc via a 100mbpshub. The second domain will consist only of a PDC. what is the easiest way to connect the two domains so the client can explore trust relationships (let me add that the client has done a bit of experimenting and has damaged the dhcp installation on the one network so I want to make this a straightforward operation for the person). Thanks in advance.

The easiest way is to probably get a machine with 2 NICs and configuring it to forward IP with RIP(act as a router). Connect the two PDCs via the router and establish the trust. You might have to edit the routing table on the router to make sure they can see each other before the trust will be successful. Good luck.

Hi, this had been my first thought - to create a multi-homed machine, so I appreciate it that you validated this. I actually ended up doing it both ways (your and #2)for various reasons. I appreciate your fast response to my questions and I apologize for my slow response.

Actually, the easiest way to do this is to have both domains reside on the same IP subnet and just provide both PDCs with static IP addresses.
Establishing a trust requires name resolution to the remote PDC and in a routed environment, this typically means that you have to place an entry in both systems' LMHOSTS file. In a single subnet environment, if the remote PDC has not registered with the WINS server, the system will attempt broadcast name resolution, and will not require any additional configuration.

Hi, you gave me the fastest and easiest method for establishing a trust. I actually ended up setting things up as you describe first and then, later, emulating routing. Thank you very much for your response and I apologize I have been so slow withmy acceptance of your answer.
