CPU (central processing unit) is an older term for processor and microprocessor, the central unit in a computer containing the logic circuitry that performs the instructions of a computer's programs.

It is consider the heart of the Computer.

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit
This is the microprocesor, such as Intel Pentium and Celeron or AMD Athlon or Duron, which processes the data and generally controls what the PC does.
In some cases it can also be used to refer to the box where everything connects to your PC but the strict definition is the first one.
