The DCPROMO Doesn't work: DNS Error

By TellMeWhy ·
Hi,

I'm having this following problem of "DNS Root Hint Error" after We upgraded our network from NT4.0 to windows2003.

Error when ?dcpromo? is used

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain psu.edu.sa:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."

(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.psu.edu.sa

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV records required to locate a domain controller for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a domain controller is added to a domain. They are updated by the domain controller at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with following IP addresses:

10.0.5.1

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

psu.edu.sa

edu.sa

sa

. (the root zone)

You are not using a single label Domain Name which could
cause that.

Are there any firewalls implemented on the machines in question
as that could cause it too?

Check that the DNS server ip is static, is set to allow dynamic
updates and you might try enabling NetBIOS over tcp/ip.

Are all of you SRV records in DNS?

take a look at this article "SRV Records Missing After
Implementing Active Directory and Domain Name
System":
