Hello!
I just noticed that my DVD-RW drive is missing in my Computer and in the Device Manager as well. First I tried by deleting the First and Secondary ATA-ATAPI IDEs drives in the Device Manager, but that did not work after I rebooted, despite that the system recognized them as missing and asked me reboot, but the DVD-RW still did not show up. I checked the BIOS after a Reboot and there is a listing for the DVD Drive. I tried to reinstall XP Pro but even the XP Pro Boot Disc was not recognized! The light came on the DVD-RW but no action.
I deleted all the Security and Software updates in the Add/Remove program but even that did not solve this problem. I am at a total loss and absolutely do not know how to get my DVD-RW drive to be recognized by the System? The DVD-RW drive is effectively dead as it is not recognized by the Sysem, nor any media put into it. It does not appear in my Computer and nor does it appear in the Device Manager! Lastly, I did not download, nor did I install any CD Burning Software within the past 3, 4 weeks, and this problem showed up only a few days ago. That is why I took the trouble to delete all the Security and Software updates from Microsoft, but even that did not seem to repair this issue. In closing, the DVD-RW drive was available and functional until several days ago when I disovered it was missing and dysfunctional. The last action I performed on it was to change the DVD-RW to a Slave jumper based on a suggestion from PC-Tech on-line Discussion group. I have a custom built 3.33 MGHz Intell PC and PC Chips Motherboard with 1024 RAM that was working fine until a few days ago when I discovered that my DVD-RW Drive was missing from the System in its entirety!
I also ran the Windows Restore program a to a Month earlier date, but that did not resolve the issue either.
Now that even my Windows XP Pro Boot CD is not recognized, I am at a complete loss and do not know what else could I do to restore my System
without wiping the OS HDD volume clean and reinstalling the OS all over again that did not work in the first place?
