After 17 years service, I was fired and immediately escorted out of the building. The company has never given me a reason. Virginia is a right-to-work state, so they were within their legal rights. Of course, I have since discovered why I was let go and will simply characterize it as conflicting personalities.
That was ten years ago and it’s sill a bitter pill. Bitter because I gave good, honest, professional service to this company and they didn’t have the decency to have any discussion about the termination or offer any severance.
Since the term “going postal” has entered our language, I believe companies have begun this practice of the “escorted termination” to protect their employees and property from persons unable to handle the emotional stress a sudden firing can produce. However, there certainly much more humane ways to accomplish this type of termination.
What legal or HR reasons do you see for this company cowardice.
