The famous 'Cloud'

By NexS ·
Hi all,

Please excuse my ignorance.
I'm sick of reading about 'cloud computing' and (as I've just read about the new windows KIN phone software) "Cloud based", so on and so forth, and not knowing what in high heck it's talking about.

I remember not too long ago, in an article regarding the use of buzzwords and how they tend to confuse situations rather than clarify, and I tend to affiliate that article with the term 'Cloud' when talking computing and technology. I must have missed a key loop somewhere along the way when they starting going on about the cloud...

I guess my question is simple. What is Cloud Computing?

Also, I guess on a discussion note, does anyone else find the word "Cloud" when referring to the lost never never's a vague and un-descriptive name for it?

I tie 'Cloud Computing' with 'Thin Client' at core, along with some guy George SomebodyorOther who wrote a book about fiber as the future and no need for local storage.

I pretty much don't like the idea of 'Thin Client' and 'Cloud Computing'. I want my stuff on my machine, not in some data warehouse somewhere accessible only via Internet.

My 2cents, tails up.

After a small amount of research

by NexS In reply to Well...

(And by small I mean that I read the first line of the first three google hits summaries), It seems like it simply means "Internet applications".
Sure, but that sounds as fun as having a cauldron of boiling tar poured over you.
What of updates? What of error correction? What of support?

It sounds like a bunch of ways to take control off people and charge people for it...

For firebrands.

Can't promise that it will be exciting or cutting edge. But you will get to carry a real, live, burning torch. And, you get to be among the first wave ordered to the fore in the Name of the People.

Kevlar makes me feel important

Important enough to survive a gunshot, but not important enough to have a scapegoat of my own.

Just enough, I would imagine. Just enough.
