The Perfect PC – OS and Software

Operating System:
Of course, Windows XP Professional is the most current. However, Windows 2000 has a lot of support, and has been proven reliable. Which one would you install, and why?

BIOS settings:
I’ve always paid attention to many of the BIOS settings, especially ones that enhance performance. For example, I disable the BIOS virus detection, configure for faster boot up by bypassing the floppy drive detection, set the first and second boot device to the same drive, skip the power on self tests, disable other boot device, disable swap floppy drive, and so on. Some of the settings, I must admit, are in areas unfamiliar to me. What are some of the more important BIOS issues to pay particular attention to?

Virus ProtectionSoftware:
Which one, and why? I’ve always used Norton Antivirus. I like the way it detects the viruses, but I hate the way it “takes over” my machine. It’s kind of a “love-hate” relationship. What are some opinions in this regard?

Miscellaneous software considerations:
What have I overlooked? What about add-on utilities, etc.?
