The regmon.ini File

By scasey ·
Recently, our Norton Anti-Virus software discovered a virus in the regmon.ini file and was unable to clean it. I looked at the file and it looks more like a log file than anything, but with the ini extension and not knowing for sure what it was (assuming its related to the registry and some kind of monitor??), I was afraid to delete it. Can you tell me what it is and the best way to proceed?

Where is the file located? What you can try to due is copy it to a floppy and then delete the file from your system to see if any problems occur as a result.

The file is located in the c:\Windows\System folder. If I delete it and it is necessary, would it be on the Windows 98 SE CD or how would I replace it with an uninfected file? That's why I'm so concerned about its origin and what it does!

Thanks anyway! I'm not in a position to reformat the drive and go through all the necessary steps right now if it crashes the system and so I'm trying all the options I can to find the best solution instead of experimenting!

Did you ever load the utility RegMon? Regmon.ini is not a default windows file it must have been created by another program and this utility is the only one i can think of. If so you can safely delete this file It should only keep settings for the utility and will be recreated when you launch the program again

Thank you so much. I do believe I had loaded the RegMon utility a year or so ago because of some problems we had with the Windows Registry. You've been very helpful - and hopefully saved me a great deal of time.
