the system cannot log you on now...

By jl.hunter ·
I recently reloaded winxp pro on my laptop. I have 2 local accounts admin and my own. I hadn't loaded any new software after ms office 2003 and avg antivirus, a day before this error appeared.
"the sytem cannot log you on now because the domain JHLAPTOP is not available."

This comes up when trying to log onto my laptop - jhlaptop. I have tried both local accounts. the laptop is not now, or has ever been a member of a domain.
I'm unable to log into windows using any of the others options, last know good config, safe mode etc, coz all ask for a username and password. I know the password for admin is right, coz i can use it to access the \windows folder when trying to repair.

Can anyone help with this? I really dont want to have to reload windows.

Hi, it seems this is quite a wierd error, it is explained in this article of the Microsoft Knowledgebase, anyway it says it applies to Win 2k, but for other experiencies I can tell it might work on Win XP.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244671/EN-US/

As you read it, you will find that a second-clean installation of the OS might be requiered.

So, I would really recommend a fresh start, after that you can get an image of your disk, for later-alike situations ;P.

Regards,

Jorge Avila

Ist option.

Reboot and logon locally. Do not choose the Domain option. Put in your username (administrator), password (with which u r able to access \windows), and from the third drop-down, choose the local machine-name and Enter.

Once in, back-up data from c: and do a fresh install of OS.

IInd option

Reinstall the OS.

AS stated, laptop not on domain, therefore not trying to log onto domain. As such, cannot log on locally, as stated, local accounts not working.

It sounds like someone changed the workgroup to a domain, but easily fixed.

As noted previously, you have the option to login localy to the computer or to the domain. You should be able to login to the local accounts, any account name you have setup previously.

If for some reason you are unable to login, someone changed the passwords probably, try without a password or the following and reset your pass:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Reboot as needed, then during boot press F8 and login to safe mode w/no networking. Login and change the domain, under Computer name tab, to workgroup (name it anything you like).

If you are still unable to login to your local domain you may need to restore your system settings. Insert your Windows cd and during the menu choose the repair option.

Hi Everybody,

Thankyou for your help so far. I may not have been clear in what was previously posted.

I am using local accounts to attempt to login in locally. I do not get a network login box, only a local login. I am not trying to log onto a domain. The domain name given in the error is the same as the pc name. No domain exists on the network, only a workgroup.

Passwords used on both accounts are correct. I cant login using the F8 menu, as it also requires u/n and p/w. Which even though correct for local accounts returns the above error.

Looking more and more like a rebuild! :)

What is the error or what happens when you enter the "Correct" credentials? Apparently, the information being entered is not correct.. so you will need to reset those credentials to login, as previously noted in my reply.

I'm sorry, but it seem's that you are looking for an "easy" answer with no work needed.

You need to try these steps before persuing further, if the steps I've defined do not work then your only option is to repair or reinstall your entier Operating System.

HI Whistler, not looking for an easy answer,

"What is the error or what happens when you enter the "Correct" credentials? Apparently, the information being entered is not correct.. so you will need to reset those credentials to login, as previously noted in my reply. "
As in my original post - "the sytem cannot log you on now because the domain JHLAPTOP is not available." The login details are correct, the error relates to login to domain account. also in orig post, not on domain, never had been, always trying to access local account (no domain on network). Admin p/w "Correct" as able to use it to access /windows when in 'repair' this requires local admin password to access. Usernames correct, passwords correct.

Thanks anyway. I do appreciate the fact that you have taken the time to read the post and reply.
