the Yankees are coming to town vs. the Yankees is coming to town

Let’s say that the Yankees baseball team is coming to town. I know that it sounds better to say that the Yankees are coming to town. However, why couldn’t you say that the Yankees is coming to town since the Yankees is one team. If you are talking about individual Yankees, then yes use “are” coming, but as a single team why can you not use “is” coming?
