ignore any business mission statement that doesn't include a reference to making money for the shareholders. Failure to acknowledge this indicates the board has no idea why they're in business.

Of course, I do agree that some North American companies focus too much on this in the short term to the detriment of the long term.

the employees will need to know the kind of ownership... if the company is owned by hedge funds, then the short term is the only term... and the employees should do their best to make the company make huge promises this month, and then not keep them next month... all the while pinching stationery.
After all, that's in the interest of the shareholders, who will be selling the company short real soon. *Mwahahahaha*

That sort of shows how righteous the system is...
