Three years with Linux!

By intj-astral ·
It's official- as of August 31 2009 00:00, I have been running Linux for three years. I have gone through OpenSUSE 10.3 through 11.1, fumed at the half-baked release of KDE 4, and cautiously watched it improve while still running KDE 3.x. I bought a notebook and use it both wired and wifi. I also dual boot it with Vista, but I have my reasons. How long have you been running Linux?

I got Mandriva in a virtual machine for 4 months now

by Slayer_ In reply to Three years with Linux!

Still haven't found much of a use for it, other than the odd porn site. Occasionally I use it to search the package manager, for app names, just to then Google them up and find the Windows equivalent.

Since Fedora Core 4 (2005)....

by ---TK--- In reply to Three years with Linux!

I ran that on my desktop for a while, then switched back to XP, for gaming reasons... Slapped it on my laptop, discovered wireless didnt play nice. Then I ran everything under the sun, to find a distro that handled wireless well... I would have to say my fav.'s are Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Mempis, and OpenSUSE.

I dual-boot OpenSUSE and XP, which I use for games and things I must know for work (like Office 2007). Linux is on drive 1 plus grub, XP on drive 2, and it all shows on the boot menu. Both drives are marked bootable but bios is set to boot from drive 1. Works perfectly. The dual-boot machine is a desktop with an Nvidia card.

We'll know Linux is mature

when people no longer feel compelled to declare how long they've been running it.

Maybe to him it's like saying he hasn't been using drugs for X number of days.

Kind of like post-Microsoft rehab/abstinence.

Five and a bit years all up.

by Deadly Ernest In reply to Three years with Linux!

Started with Red Hat, Mandrake, Mandriva, Fedora Core 4, SuSe, SimplyMepis, Kubuntu, PCLinuxOS, back to SimplyMepis. Tried most of the others and keep coming back to SimplyMepis as I like the KDE3.5 GUI.

All that after over twenty years with DOS and Windows.

re: The KDE 3.5 GUI

I'm running it too, it's faster and simpler than 4.x I have played with KDE4 occasionally but I'd rather wait for more polish and maturity on that desktop before I commit to serious daily use. It was a virus that made me put my foot through the floor and go to Linux.
