Time Sync of Netware 4.x Server

By rick_b ·
I have a NW 4.11 server that keeps gaining twenty minutes or so a month. Is there a way to find out whats causing the acceleration of time?. I was thinking of a NLM, but the server has no Internet Access and don't want to expose to the Internet. Theclients do have Internet Access through a router.I could sync that way, but I want the best solution. I know this is a little problem, but as all of you know, its quite annoying so I am awarding 500 points to rid this once and for all.

Time Sync of Netware 4.x Server

If your server is a "single" server and does not get time from any other source than it's internal clock - I would say that there is a problem with your internal clock. Have you tried to change the time and re-sync the server? If you are ahead (byan hour or so) you can change the time back and let the server use synthetic time while it resynchronizes. Have your checked in the dsrepair to make sure the server is set as the primary time source? E-mail me at smarshall@geauga.kent.edu and let me know - i'll give you more info after you answer the questions I had... Good luck!

Time Sync of Netware 4.x Server

We're still talking clock speed, and like the last post indicates ... if you have a single server, the problem lies at the server, most probably at the CMOS level. You did not mention what the server platform is (brand, or model). I will assume that it is a server that has been certified to work with Novell Netware.

In my experience, the only things that will cause a single server to get out of time are inaccurate clocking signals which adjust the Netware clock. The OS is probably not theculprit. Checking all of the latest patch levels never hurts, however.

If there are multiple servers, and this server is the primary time keeper, change the primary server and secondary servers to reverse roles and see if the problem persists. If so, you have a communication problem with the network and /or config issue. If it solves the problem ... the original primary time server has a hardware problem that must be fixed.

Hope this puts you on the right track.
