Tips for new IT consultant company

By justinm001 ·
I recently started my own IT consulting firm part-time and was looking for pointers. I'm focusing on small businesses with 5-50 employees and currently have 2 clients. Is there anything I should make sure to do to keep current clients happy and establish relationships with new clients?

Many of your new customers will come through recommendations from your existing clients. Therefore keeping them happy is very important. Here is what you can do to keep them happy.

1. Always deliver on time.
2. Always answer your phone, even if you are a late starter.
3. Never make it about the money, make it about the service.
4. Having said 3 above, always bill on time and insist on timely payments, but never show desperation when you don't get paid on time. Your customers need to know that you have a proper accounting and billing practice and sound financial footing.
5. Always keep records and keep your books current. Monitor your cash flow, expenses and regularly calculate your profit. Knowing where you stand will be a major motivating factor.
6. Bite only what you can chew.
7. Don't be afraid to sub-contract. When you are small, it is better to bring in help than to try and do it all yourself or miss an opportunity because its too big.
8. As you grow bigger, invest in the right help - human resources will be your biggest asset.
9. Always upgrade your skill and explore and learn newer technologies and better ways of doing things.
10. Lastly, build your business on a sound business structure, rather than opportunistic over profiting. Standardise your business, do not depend on one or two big customers, rather spread out and take in several smaller customers...this way it wont hurt your business too much if one decides to leave.
