Title: Unable to PING remote host(s)

by gonzo2 . Updated 25 years, 10 months ago

Category: Network Admin.

Environment(s): Win 98/95/2000

Protocols: TCP/IP, NetBEUI, IPX/SPX. All sets have IP addresses in the range 192.168.0.x with netmasks 255.255.255.0. Two network adapters in the internet host machine – one for LAN loop and one for cable modem.

Tests: All sets PING _loopback_ OK. _Some_ remote hosts return originator PING query, and in turn can PING the originator. _All_ sets participate correctly in sharing files, printers.

New Info: NetOP’s Remote Control Utility _did_ see one of the “hidden” ping addresses. This is a new development, and seems to point to an address resolution issue, although I can’t see what resolution is needed at the IP level (?MAC address resolution).

Problem:
Some other sets cannot be seen by some PING originators, although the sets can PING their counterpart hosts successfully.

Question:
Why is this, and what can I use to detect the faulty protocols/parameters. (If this already a well-worn FAQ item pls point me to it with my apologies.)

Value of Answer:
High (200) – This problem prevents me from having a full network participate in Internet / EMail service. (I have browsed the sections dealing with this general issue without success. My apologies if I have overlooked anything…)
