To all my GREAT TR peers – you guys are GREAT!

Locked

by maxwell edison ·

Okay guys, give it up. Even if it’s only a dollar, it all counts. Let the scrolling list be dominated with TechRepublic peers.

Five bucks – Give up a couple of those gourmet beers you all talk about.

Ten bucks – Give up a couple of Starbucks coffees.

With the hundreds and thousands of TR peers, helping Trish hit $10,000 should be a cake walk.

Work a couple of extra overtime hours, and give it to the cause.

The bumps are great, but the dollars are better..

In reply to I wonder who

That reminded me of a little bit of musical trivia.

Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert of that band (before there was the band) wrote John Denver’s hit song Take Me Home, Country Roads, the one that propelled Denver into the big-time. John Denver often gets credit for writing it, and although he wrote a lot of great stuff, he didn’t write that one.

Thought you might be interested in that little bit of meaningless trivia. (And for a bump, of course.)

The TR Pink Ribbon Brigade

by tig2 ·

In reply to To all my GREAT TR peers – you guys are GREAT!

Max, I can’t thank you enough. One day I will explain why this thread started an extremely high pollen count in my office this morning.

I did a quick add up. I receive an email from the 3 Day every time someone donates online. This morning my email was pretty crowded.

This year so far, TR has contributed $940 to the Breast Cancer 3 Day in support of my 2008 walk. As of this minute, I am just shy of $3000 and well on my way to making my goal of $10,000.

The Breast Cancer 3 Day is a 60 mile walk over 3 days. All money raised from this walk is donated- 85% to the Susan G. Komen for a Cure and 15% to the National Philanthropic Trust’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Last year my city raised over $6.4 MILLION!

More than the money, the event raises awareness, the key to early detection and the closest thing we have today to a cure.

So far, Mike and I have trained 53 participants and that number grows each weekend. We will also be adding a training walk mid week beginning the first week in August and will be hosting a variety of support classes for walkers. In the last two years doing this event, we feel we have learned much and are trying to pass that on to new walkers participating for the first time.

From my first year doing this event, you guys have raised thousands of dollars from every corner of the world. According to the 3 Day coaches, I am the only person they have ever had receive donations from India, Ireland, Australia, Canada and the UK. You guys ROCK!

Every year I proudly wear the names of both survivors and angels on this walk. If you have a friend or loved one that you would like to have celebrated, please PM me the name and years as a survivor or if your person is an angel. I am making the 2008 ribbons now and will take names up to Day One of the event- September 19th. I wear those ribbons to the local Komen event as well. People tell me that the visual impact is very strong.

This year, I am the captain of The Pink Ribbon Brigade- a team that began with all of you and is comprised of peers from all over the world. I am making Mike’s shirts for the event- he gets photographed more than I do!- and will use your avatars here in the design of those shirts. You will all be at the event with us.

You are all so unbelievably special to me and I can’t thank you enough for all your support. We are proving that we can and DO make a difference in the fight against Breast Cancer!

A note about Tigs donation list

by jdclyde ·

In reply to To all my GREAT TR peers – you guys are GREAT!

It is scrolling the people that made contributions and how much they gave, unless indicated otherwise.

It has been found that YOUR donation counts MORE if it is NOT anonymous because it inspires others to do the same.

It isn’t beating your chest and showing how grand you are, it is leading the way, and others will follow.

If you REALLY care about a cause, the best way to support is by showing others that you do support.

If you care about something, show that you do.

Thanks Tig, for being an inspiration to us, on how to be a better person that can do so much for others.

a bit distracted, writing Final Exams, grading last minute homework submissions, revamping my Blackboards, keeping up with that Israel thread. Never been much of a multi-tasker. 😉

8 Finals to give next week, grades to be posted by 5pm the 28th. Then I get a ‘break’ for a couple of weeks, in which I will transfer my (hopefully by then) revamped Summer Blackboards to Fall Blackboards. Ugh. That never seems to go quite right. Always some clean up after the process is supposedly complete.

I never had to deal with Blackboard when I was teaching, but I used to hear horror stories. Is it really that bad, or was it just resistance to technology fueling the stories?

My lesson plans were in a spreadsheet; all I had to do at the beginning of a term was change the start date and move lessons around holidays, workdays, and test days.

by boxfiddler ·

In reply to Need more coffee?

improves with each new version. I think (I have no way of knowing for certain) that the Banner system that runs behind Blackboard is the source of the trouble.

Banner is a royal pita, everyone b*tches about it. Fortunately, I don’t have to deal much with it. Banner is the system that manages student, staff, course, and faculty data.

7/19- 14 miles

by tig2 ·

In reply to To all my GREAT TR peers – you guys are GREAT!

I don’t know that 14 miles is any harder than 13 miles unless you are trying to walk in near 90% humidity. And you are trying to beat a storm.

I altered the training walk so that we could go back to our cars (and water and restrooms) every three to four miles. Because NOAA was saying rain followed by strong thunderstorms, I thought that this would be the best plan. In a way I was right- the thunderstorms started just as we finished the last loop. At least no one had to walk in wet shoes!

Tomorrow is 10 miles, a distance that we have all done before. Hopefully everyone went home and attacked their ibuprofen bottles. It really is key to survival.

I have finally washed the trail and the bug spray off. I found the Cutter’s Advanced that AV suggested but discovered that I need to reapply often. But today was an above average sweat day so I am waiting to see how it works under normal conditions.

We saw a couple of yearling does today and numerous birds. The fun part of these walks is seeing the native critters.

I will be sending walk pics to Sonja for TROLOV on Friday. Anyone caught laughing at my tragically bed hair will be shot. No exceptions!

10 miles tomorrow. Hope that foot bath massager thingie works!

by av . ·

In reply to 7/19- 14 miles

Yuk. You definitely have to watch the weather reports. Gosh, good luck tomorrow. I think you need an Ibuprofen IV and defintely the footbath. Its an interesting point that you make about Cutter Advanced. If you are active and apply it, how long is it really good for? There used to be a product from Coppertone called Coppertone Sport. That worked pretty well, don’t know if its still available.

Whose hair looks good in 90% humidity anyway? Only bald people.

AV :^0

Truly bad hair

by tig2 ·

In reply to Its hard to walk when its so humid

I got bit a couple of times on my legs near my knees yesterday so only managed 2 miles today. The bites literally swelled up so bad that it made walking very painful.

The Cutters does seem to work but is something that we need to carry and reapply every mile or so in high humidity. But frankly I think that anything I use would need the same- especially in the humidity that we have had lately. I’ll try it again on a day with lower humidity. But I will also look into the Bullfrog stuff Tammy suggested.

I took a picture of the bite on my leg. It will give you an idea of how badly I react to insect venom.

In my world, bad hair is stapled to my head using about a dozen of the pressure type barrettes and then corralled into a ponytail. That has been about the best way to keep it from being everywhere or laying on my neck. There is really too much of it but I don’t want to change anything before the walk. So I live with it.

Bald, hmm? You may have something there.

A Funny TRUE story

by the scummy one ·

In reply to The late afternoon…

just to show how ignorant some people are with fad objects….lol

Ok, I was outside right now having a smoke, listening to my mp3 player. Someone walks up to me and asks if it is an IPOD, I said no, she asked what it was. So I told her it was an MP3 player — just a cheapie. She asked where to buy one! I said she can go to many stores, but would likely find one at Frys or Micro Center or the like.
She then asked me What was an mp3.. Ok, (did I mention she asked if it was an ipod), so I said it is playing music, and she said WOW.
She the preceeds to tell me that she bought an IPOD NANO last year. But she had no idea what it did, or how to use it. She just clips it on sometimes……..

WHAT?????

I actually couldnt control myself when I started laughing. But she repeated it and asked how to use it, and if it could play an mp3, and how to get an mp3 on it

Holy Cr@p — this person spent the money on (in her words) the upgraded nano, and didnt even know WHAT it was for, was too lazy to even look in the manual, and just wore it around from time to time :^0 :^0 :^0

if you want a clip on that does nothing, spend $5 – but I guess some people got too much money and want everything!
Hmmm, why can they just toss a few hundred $$$ my way, and I’ll hook them up on a $20 MP3 player and show them how to buy mp3’s 😀

by ontheropes ·

In reply to I thought it was hilarious

I do stupid stuff too. For example, I’ve been living on a really tight budget so I’ve learned how to get by on less. That’s soon to end, (hurry up) and one of the first things I thought I’d do would be to buy an Apple Mac Pro. Good thing I’ve had a cooling off period because although I’d love a shot at a Mac, to satisfy my inner geek, the reality is that that the PC I’m using will do everything that I need it to do. I am going to breakdown and buy Photoshop but other than that I don’t need another computer. That’s just like having to have the latest tech toy. I’d love to be able to do that but I know that the newness wears off all too soon.

I don’t think I’ve ever bought something like an iPod just because it was the thing to have though. I’ve never been that air-headed although I did have some really nice hand tools that didn’t see a lot of use. :0 That’s different. :^0

7/26- 15 miles

by tig2 ·

In reply to To all my GREAT TR peers – you guys are GREAT!

Today we led 11 ladies through a 15 mile training walk. While not sweltering heat, it was certainly hot enough. Thank God the humidity was down!

We got to the park where we have our first pitstop. There was a group of Hmong having a church service at the bench where we usually gather. Listening to their hymns was particularly beautiful. They sang a capella and it was lovely. You could see that they were joyous at being together and worshiping together.

Today we tried a new route so that we were walking longer stretches away from the park that is our home base. Our walks next month start into the 17 and 18 mile levels so the walkers need to start thinking about leaving their cars in the parking lot and returning only infrequently.

We had a pair- mother and daughter- who are walking in Chicago. Their walk is in two weeks. They had no trouble staying with the walk today and were good about staying hydrated so I doubt that they will have any problems.

Tomorrow is 11 miles. As long as the ibuprofen holds out, I will make it just fine.

As of today, donations are at $3560 and growing!

Thats Nothing

by the scummy one ·

In reply to I dropped my pen under my desk

I was just in a cubicle, setting up a system. Couldnt figure
out why the dock got power, but the notebook didnt. Re-
docked and all, went to the floor. A small trash can was in
the way, I moved it out of the way. Bumped my thumb on
the table stand/leg 🙁
At that moment someone from the next cube asked why I
just unplugged her system :0
Bumping my thumb caused her system to shut off :^0 :^0
— but afterwards I couldnt replicate by even moving the
cables around ?:|

So, I guess if Scummy’s Thumb gets Bumped, computers
feel the pain and shut off :^0

Sunday morning, time for another road trip

by jdclyde ·

In reply to Sunday back from meetin’ BUMP

ThingTwo is going to band camp today, and ThingOne is going to cross country camp tomorrow.

had a 7 hour road trip yesterday, so am glad the band geeks are riding a bus to camp, so I just have to get them to the school.

cross country doesn’t get the school funding, so we are driving the kids to camp. I volunteered (of course) and then friday will go pick them up again.

ah, the busy life of a dad, huh?

I had my seven-hour road trip on Friday—day trip to Myrtle Beach. I love to drive, but Lord, there are some idiots out there!

Band camp for my sons’ school was a local day camp and close enough for them to walk.

A simple Solution

by w2ktechman ·

In reply to Trying to lose a few pounds

Dont Eat!
Just like Smoking, it is a bad habit that gets in the way of life. The Eating Habit has been around for many a year, however we need to BREAK THE HABIT!!!
Eating causes many disorders in humans, so therefore it is IMPERATIVE to STOP!!!
We, as people have become too dependant on things such as FOOD. Well, some news, Food is overrated.
Food causes — High Cholesterol, Artery Blockage, smelly waste, and a myriad of other problems. We must COMMIT to stop eating ourselves to DEATH!!

So all of you with a fork, spoon, sandwich, or other food in front of you PLEASE Re-Consider putting it into your mouth. If it is in your mouth already SPIT IT OUT promtly and push it aside.

And just remember, this is not a diet, this is a LifeStyle!
So join the new revolution, and STOP YOUR EATING HABITS NOW!!!

Usually, I am watering them every other week. However, I noticed that this year, some of the roots are rotting, and the pots are staying wet longer. So, I am starting a once a moth schedule.

weather is seemingly weird a lot of places. Flooding is rampant here, unusual for this time of year. A local soccer field has been underwater all summer – as opposed to its usual spring flood dry out by June pattern. A few other playing fields near rivers suffer the same fate.

I thought 1993 flooding was bad – well, it was but it dried out in ‘standard’ fashion. This year is bad in that its just not drying out. Strange.

I discovered a PC today that had been missed during last year’s memory upgrades. GX-270 running WinXP under Citrix with only 128 MB RAM installed. It wasn’t just slow, it was flat out glacial?10 minutes just to get to the corporate warning! I have no idea how the end user put up with it for so long.

Just happened to have a 512MB stick on hand. I knew there was a reason I kept quiet when they sent me extra sticks back during the upgrade…
