Your question is very general, but here's some ideas to get discussion going.

1. The golden rule - treat others as you would like to be treated.

2. Know yourself - what are your strengths/weaknesses? How do you react to situations? Do you havethe communication skills to lead a team? Do you see the big picture, or deal with problems as they arise? Do you yell at people? Are you encouraging? How would you handle having to fire someone?

3. Customer service - this is one of my biggest complaints about businesses. Do you know what good customer service is? Can you train others to provide good service?

4. Sales skills - Do you have the ability to sell? Can you teach others? (And another tip - don't forget add-on sales. Remember "Do you want fries with that?"!)

There are a lot of things that go into making a good manager, but it also depends of the type of manager you want to be. There are good business managers and there are good people managers. Ideally, with your own business, you would want to be both.

Good luck!
