To B.S. or Not to B.S…………Advice Please!

by mtech05 . Updated 17 years, 8 months ago

am a 27 year old married guy with an awesome 16 month old son and beautiful wife. I have been working in the Pc Technical Support arena for about 6 years now. I am currently a contractor for a state government (no chance of perm hire) working as a Level II/III Desktop Support Analyst. I would very much prefer to have something a bit more permanent and with benefits. I currently hold a A.A.S. Degree in Microcomputer Technology (Cisco networking). I also hold my A+ and Network+ certifications from CompTIA. Recently I have been looking into going back to school for my B.S. degree. The degree is actually a Bachelor of Science in Technology Management (BSTM). I am also currently in the process of studying for my Security+ certification from CompTIA.
I feel I am at this fork in the road in regard to what direction I should take my career. If I go left, I pursue my BSTM and hope a few more doors open for me in regard to available jobs and opportunities. If I go right I continue to slog along in Pc Support and grab a few certifications on the way and get lucky and find a better opportunity. For me I am leaning more left since, in my mind anyway, I will be better off in the long run with the BSTM. The thing that concerns me is that BS degree is in managment and I am not sure if managemant is where I want to go. All I do know is that I can not see myself doing Pc Desktop Support for the next 30+ years. Ideally I would love to get involved more in the security sector (currently working toward the Security+), but seem to be reading how hard it is to break into this area. Can anyone give an opinion or thought on a possible direction? Thanks for listening.
