To Cert or not to Cert, that is the question

Question, what is so wrong with certification?

When reading various discussions here, it is obvious there are very many “professionals” that think all certifications are rubbish. Most comments against certification go along the lines of “I have been in the business 100 years and don,t need it, people who have certs don,t know a thing, etc, etc”.
Firstly, I agree, experience is THE most important aspect, but were you born with all this experience? No. You have to get a job first and then , over time, comes the experience. Certifications are used by many newcomers to get a foot in the door (user support jobs, etc) so that they can start gathering experience! Furthermore, many experienced professionals use certification to increase their knowledge and make themselves more marketable.

Certification alone is, I agree, not worth much. However, as a door opener or additional knowledge, are they really so bad?
