To degree or not to degree

By mxmartinez ·
I am in my mid 30's, I have been in IT for 4 years now. I was thinking of going back to university to get a degree in computer science. I asked my current boss for advice on which track to take, but he stated that at this point in my life it would be a waste of time and money to do this.

Is he right?
And I have an option of taking an Information Management degree or a Telecommunications degree. Can I have some opinions on these

You asked for a Personal opinion and you got one. On the other hand consider what you want to do and are willing to get a degree will enhance your chances of making one more carrer change, that could land you in a field that you will be doing something that you enjoy. Both fields are growing and then who knows what the situation will be when you graduate with a degree. If the time and finances are not a problem then it is your decision to do what you think is best for yourself.

I was in a similar situation as you in my 30's with no degree working in IT. Due to my not having a BS degree my line was cut for a few promotions because the min. requirement was a 4-year degree. I had all of the qualifications except the degree sothey used it against me. I went out and finished my degree and now no more excuses I got my promotion and pay raise. It was worth the sacrifice in my opinion. But it depends on your situation. Can you get to where you want to be without a degree? Will getting a degree help you with your future plans? You have to sit down and weight the pluses and minuses.

It is never to late. Just Do It.

Look at the paper - what happens if you get laid off, do you think "No Degree" will help you find your next position at the same salary level?

Don't turn 50 and say - "Dam I now work a McDonalds - I should of gotten that degree!"

Take the time, get that paper - If you want to go into managemnet then take the BA if you want Tech go for a BS. You have to figure where you want to be at the end of that road, and what you what out of your career.

A friend was a RN - went on and got a Master in a specific field of nursing - (4 years later) he is now making over $140,000 a year. You want the big bucks - got to get the education - only the few today make the big dollars without the degree.

GO BACK TO SCHOOL - Just Do It..

Perhaps your boss is afraid that he will lose you if you obtain the degree, and are faced with possibly better job offers. Or perhaps the organization you work for does not place an emphasis on the degree. But many employers do. And many folks inthe computer field go back to school at various stages of their careers. Within my organization we have a great emphasis on graduate degrees, and channel training funds to support current employees going to local universities at night. We even have special arrangements with one of the local universities and they have offered classes in our facilities. Employees who participate range in age from the lower 20s to the upper 50s. You may be as successful as Mr. Gates without the degree, but many feel that it is a great way to strucutre professional growth and even to nourish professional contacts.
