To express or not to express update TIT question

By VytautasB ·
While I have never felt comfortable with Windows update I grit my teeth and of course update and set it to run automatically. However I decided to forego the express install and actually spend some time and watch the choices listed when clicking on custom install. One of them was labelled something like "Slovenian interface update". English and Lithuanian interfaces are ok with me but I don't need Slovenian since I don't speak the language. This however set me to wonder about the process that goes on when microsoft goes through my pc and determines what updates I need. Which updates do I really need? Also which ones can I live without without having to worry that the update is doing something to make my pc run slower or worse? Just a pet peeve of mine regarding "automatic updates".

actually,

I won't do automatic updates on my linux boxes either, for the same reason.

some available updates are for software that it not used, or installed. and I prefer to not risk having them installed with an automatic script.

as little as I like windows, the issue affects all operating systems, not just windows.

SuSe also...

You're correct in that Jaqui. A little while back SuSe updates were killing KDE. While the updates themself, and SuSe were not at fault, doing the updates automaticly were. (I found out the hard way)

No Automatic here either

When the updates do come out I always check first. I see you have the same problem as I do, multiple languages on the OS. Anyway, what really bugs me is that MicroSoft DOES go through everyones PC. Ok, it's nice to think that you'll get what you need that way, but it still bugs me.!.
