To specialized or to diversify?

by chowlyefong . Updated 19 years, 4 months ago

I am facing a dilemma on deciding whether I should stay in my current specialization as a Lotus Notes specialist, or to take up a new job which required me to learn on other technologies like Java and .NET. While I still have the passion in doing Lotus Notes, the new job catch my interest because it gives me a chance to diversify and learn up on other technologies/languages. However, switching would mean that I will lost touch with Lotus Notes.

I am not sure if switching is the way to go. Opportunity for advancement looks good on both, with the new one paying slightly more currently. In my current job, I have already advanced up to the level of project management, but will have to take a step back in the new one since I do not have experience in the technologies they are using at the moment. However, the new one does present the potential to advance up to project management in future.

I heard that my current team will be restructured soon and I might got into a new team at present job to do Websphere – an equally exciting challenge as presented in the new job offer. Should I stay and keep my specialization in Lotus Notes while learning Websphere? Or should I take up the new job to learn on the more commonly used Java and .NET? Any advise will be much appreciated. Thanks.
