To use or not to use Wins on a Win2k?

by erikdr In reply to To use or not to use Wins ...

If your LAN will _solely_ have W2K Pro (and soon XP) clients, then DDNS will suffice.
If you also have downlevel clients (NT, Win 9x) you will need WINS. Full stop.

(The question whether you added the ADS client to those downlevel Windows machines is irrelevant. The client helps them a lot to browse ADS but cannot take away WINS dependency...)

Hope this helps,

DNS.

I have even run "pure DNS" on an all-NT4 network. It's not quite as "pretty" as also running WINS, but it works.

Since you are going into W2K, then you could also run with DDNS.

With a Windows 2000 Domain you have to use DNS. Weather you need to use WINS really depends on do you have any applications that will require NETBIOS to work.
