Em - He's told you his CAPS keys are broken ...

HIS APOLOGY IS IN THE BOTTOM 2 LINES OF HIS TEXT !!

Perhaps if you'd explained WHERE and WHAT his Caps Lock key is (above the Left Shift key) instead of berading him?

To save your data, i suggest you get another hdd..

by Peconet Tietokoneet In reply to TOSHIBA LAPTOPS AND VERY ...

Get another laptop hdd. And since you do not know what you are doing it will be best to take your computer to a shop, but saying that, if you are up for it do this.

1). Get another laptop hdd
2). Get a USB powered caddy (external case)
3). Put the OLD hdd drive in the caddy.
4). Put the NEW hdd into the laptop.
5). Install Your Windows system software
When finished with all of the updates etc, connect the USB drive to your computer so that you can copy off your data.
Hope all goes well.

What does he then do with his old HDD ? ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to To save your data, i sugg ...

It might be better to use the USB caddy with another computer, to copy the data to. It could then be copied back to a USB thumb drive which would be a more sensible investment than a second (superfluous) HDD.

The HDD could then be wiped with 'Darik's Boot & Nuke' and the OS reinstalled back onto the HDD.

The USB thumb drive could then be used to transfer all his data back, and used for future inter-computer transfers.

Recovery Console wont help you

by IC-IT In reply to TOSHIBA LAPTOPS AND VERY ...

You need to do an in-place repair. You do need a CD or recovery disk that can do this (not all OEM options can do this). This "should" not damage any currently installed programs or documents.

The RC password is an old issue that was present on systems using the original XP build, OEM customizations, and Sysprep. There was no admin password but RC always wanted one.
The bad file was (is) Spcmdcon.sys (the article claims two, but this one was all I ever needed). If you try to fix it, you really only need one disk. Just use the same disk to simulate using 6 and the files are the last to be installed.
