Toshiba USb HDD not recognised

by rick_hughes . Updated 18 years, 6 months ago

Bought a 320GB Toshiba USB HDD to keep all my pictures, backups etc. .. away from the PC.
All been working great … except today .. plug it in and USB advises it’s “USB Device Not recognized”
This was on a Windows XP machine.

Also tried it on VISTA PC … here it advises it is loading drivers for detected device, then brings up “USB Device Not recognized”

Under Device Manager it shows “Unknown Device”

Tried 3 PC’s with same result.

Drive is starting up, and you can hear HD spinning.

This is so annoying .. only switched on for the actual backups – so had very very little use, and did it this way to avoid data failure if main PC discs (constant use) failed.

I did contact Toshiba .. they replied,
“Sounds like Bad controller or power up issues. There is nothing you can do here to fix this problem. ”

I need to recover the files (even if just the pictures) … any suggestions ?
