    Tough Problem with Win2K

    Locked

    by qhcomputingny ·

Have a Win2k workstation that is only about 8 months old. Here’s the problem. All along user has had no problem using the system. All of a sudden if the user hits the start button then goes to settings, then printers and clicks on printers it does not bring up the printers form. If the user reboots her system and tries it again, it works. This problem does not happen all the time. Maybe every other day. The only solution I have found that fixes this problem is to reformat the hard drive and re-install the operating system. It has happened on two other computers in the office, same problem. Both instances before this were fixed after reformatting and re-installing Win2k. This is a very annoying/weird problem that does not seem to have a solid answer. Anyone who can answer this question deserves the gold in troubleshooting. 🙂

Not sure if this will help, but the station has 128 megs of RAM, it’s a PIII 1.2 GHZ, and also has the Novell Client installed. We are thinking that having the Novell Client installed could have something to do with it, but are not totally sure. Weare currently in the process of trying to get everything moved to our Windows 2k server from the Novell server to see if that reduces weird user problems and/or speeds up the network.

      Hi,

      …and is availabble at…

      http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/

This includes fixes for all sorts of printer problems including netware related ones.
      Here’s a list.

Could be a printer driver problem. I have seen problems like this on Win 95, 98, and NT 4.0. It was caused by Hewlett Packard laserjet drivers. When we used the HP laserjet 3 drivers (even though we had HP laserjet 4 printers and they were networked)the problem went away. One other possiblity: There is an odd quirk with Windows and long printer names that causes strange things like this to occur. Make sure the printer name is as short as you can get it.

I have experienced with the network client installed it will corrupt the profiles on many NT and 2000 systems.
Sometimes just deleting the profile will correct this when it recreates it’s self.
It is usually a rights issue as to why you see or don’t see some things with in 2k .

      Hope this helps.

you can try to patch your novell client if it is not patch with service pack 3, or remove novell completly and reinstall it . it should correct the problem and then patch the novell client..
