The outstanding job done posting latest comments first don’t work no more. Is this apparent to anyone else?

I’m looking at it right now.

by seanferd ·

In reply to TR giveth; TR taketh

Ansu’s post at top: Just in. But it looks like they are poking around with the site design, because bits are displaying like crap (esp. preference boxes expanded) and the Just In is now in a thread-width lime-green bar.

edit: LOL, it now has a Go To Comment function, but clicking it renders the comment on a page all by itself, now completely devoid of context. (Hard to get less context than before, but somehow this was managed.) But I assume this is still a work in progress.

We’ll get to see if it is bad by design or bad because it is half-functional and in transition later. I still grant the benefit of the doubt. My ability to do that, however, is wearing quite thin.

Personally, I hate the Just in feature. If you can click it and find the location of the post, that would be great. otherwise, it is pointless to me. I’m glad the other top rider is gone – most popular or whatever it was.

edit again: I see Top Rated is now back in another thread. *sigh*. If you have fifty comments rated +2, and 2 is the highest rating in the thread, how is “top rated” determined? Not that it matters: How does it make any sense, and why would anyone care?

Interesting…

by ansugisalas ·

In reply to I’m looking at it right now.

But not what was topical…
For a while it was so that the discussions were ordered chronologically, with newest on top – when clicking the “sort by date” section.
Now it’s back to sorting oldest first by default… which is dumb.
Almost as dumb as the black bar.
_Goddamnit, bottom line has been anonymized, as if it’s a suspect not yet proven guilty.
I say with Welles: Bottom line is guilty as hell, show us its face!

EDIT: Gah! Green?!? And now the title is a link again… and not the timestamp.

by seanferd ·

In reply to Face it.

I’m hoping that this loading a whole new page thing for comment or reply is just a quirk of work in progress. If it is by design, it is beyond incredibly stupid.

Either way, I’m not impressed by the supposed awesome new crew of “experts”, nor the supposed awesomeness of the new back end that supposedly makes changes easier. Not buying it one bit. Give us back the old forumware and Doug and company.

This ongoing travesty is worse by far than the previously worst site tinkering. Nothing was ever this bad.

I don’t like making these comments, but they are true. These clowns are full of themselves, including the mouthpiece.

I’ve also noticed some of the best writers write less, or have seemingly disappeared. Too bad.

edit: Did I forget to mention the complete jerks and morons this site now attracts more than ever, in greater numbers? I’d gladly trade them in for the regular handful of blowhards with no critical thinking skills we used to have. And now with more spam than ever!

And what’s really nice about the Up / Down arrows

by charliespencer ·

In reply to Lookit!

is that the Down arrow remains in relative position. If you click it, it remains under your cursor regardless of the length of the post. When you’re ready to move to the next post, you can click again without repositioning your cursor. Just keep clicking and the subsequent posts will continue to open.

They’re also present beneath each expanded comment, but those adjust to stay positioned beneath the bottom margin of the comment. That means they don’t stay in the same place relative to the cursor. Still, it’s nice to see them on either side of the comment.

I like a nice, clean, orderly website, not this nonscense drively type stuff my 7 yr old would create because it was “pretty”. I think TR used to have something like 4 levels back in the olden days. Maybe that means they will finally get rid of the “take offline to the water cooler” thing which is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. All you end up with in the water cooler are random posts that don’t mean anything because it doesn’t reference the originating thread.

I would think the 7 level change is sitewide, though I haven’t tried it out yet.

I’m using IE8 on XP mostly and occasionally IE9 on 7 64 Bit but I see these in FF, Chrome and Safari when I have to switch browsers to post.

For the last 5 days I’ve been able to post with IE though without any issues. Prior to that I used to just see the Reply Link Expand and then remain blank most of the time. You could try highlighting it and then scroll it off the page and sometimes that would bring up the Post Box. Not often mind you but often enough to make you try it before opening another browser. 😉

If you are in collapsed view and you click on a post, it shows you the post without changing your position in the thread. The up and down arrows can take you up and down through every post in the thread, without losing your place. Thats a good change, because in the past, you would just lose your place if you clicked on a link.

The collapsed view is definitely easier to navigate.

Site fixes

by golampo ·

In reply to TR giveth; TR taketh

I’m a developer w/ the site, and we have just pushed out several fixes in response to some of the bugs reported in this thread. We’ve worked hard on the new features, which are an attempt to provide a more usable discussion experience. I still see a few areas where we can make big improvements, but we are getting there. We’ve added the dynamic navigation element (arrows, auto-scrolling, keyboard commands, etc) to the expanded thread, as well as collapsed. If you don’t like using the navigation, you can just ignore it and use the expanded view. The navigation will skip over items that are below your vote threshold.

Tip: Try navigating via the right and left arrows on your keyboard.

Fixes:

– Clicking ‘Go to comment’ on featured messages now takes you to the proper context in the thread. This also goes for the My Disucssion area. I did notice this still needs to be fixed on Contacts tab on the discussion door (will get that fix our shortly).

– Alert on reply was stuck in an “on” position. Check box should now always pull from your Community preferences. Sorry about that 😉

– Auto scrolling not correctly calculating on first comment

– Styling fixes (few more to come)

Please continue to let us know about any problems you find. Thanks for your help.

Don’t mind if we users are chomping at the bit – it’s mostly from not knowing what’s happening, so it’s really nice to hear from the developer side!!!
Your work is appreciated, and now it seems like things are really shaping up!
Great work!

Thanks! I would have been satisfied just having the problem acknowledged. The silence from the PTBs and the constant misdiagnosis from the ‘Site Help and Feedback’ was at least as frustrating as the problem itself. Now I can clean up my Alerts and know that I’m not wasting my time. (It would be nice if the Alerts page had the same checkboxes as the Newsletters page, so that multiple Alerts could be unsubscribed in one operation instead of one at at time.)

See if it displays wrong in your browsers too.
What I get is that when I scroll down, the black bar (sound of cursing) is stuck about 1/3rd of the way, and after that the thread continues. However, after the bar nothing is clickable, the page display buttons at the end ([1] [2] [3]) aren’t working either.

Anyone noticed

That some time through the day around midnight TR Mothership Time that the TR Discussion & Question pages revert back to postings that are quite some time old?

Then when you go to the View More the postings there are all over the place according to the date that they where posted?

On the Question side of the Forum the shown questions are again old and when you click on the View More there are no questions.

It’s beginning to drive me nuts as all of the existing Questions/Discussions from that day just disappear and are unfindable again unless you know exactly what they where headed where you can Google them.

How many lines of code do you think it takes to achieve something like that

So seemingly random and inexplicable

Could be hard to fix for that same reason 🙁
