hi guys,
this is a general question, and i would so much apreciate help of any kind, as this is a treat to my job.
i would like to know how i can trace the source of an email which was sent using a pulic email service provider. how can i trace theip address of the machine which was used to send this this mail. i would appreciate help of any kind

Hmm, i think that it is possible to report an abuse to tech support engineers of most web-based email (such as hotmail) as long as you can convince them. but for doing it yourself, im afraid you cannot. if the email was sent using a private ISP, youmay contact the admin of that particular ISP and convince them to divulge to you details of that mail connection.

McAfee has a product called Visual Trace

In Outlook 2000:

Right click on the email, & choose options.
Read down thru the internet headers section until you see a line that says Received From: usually followed by the DNS Name & IP Address.

If you get the DNS name only, you can use the Command Prompt TRACERT dnsname to obtain the IP Address
