Tracking PDAs

By weaverd ·
My company is getting ready to purchase quite a few PDAs. I am wondering how people are tracking such mobile devices? I understand the security aspects but are they being tagged for inventory?

We use a series of Fixed Asset numbers for things valued over $300. The FA numbers then get logged into a database (for depreciation, etc). I also keep an Excel spreadsheet with equipment information on all IT assets. I have two folders, one for stationary equipment, and one for equipment that leaves the site. This enables me to track who has what, and what the serial numbers, software installed, etc at hand.
We also require equipment to be signed out by the user, and keep that one file, so that if equipment is "lost or stolen" we can hold the user responsible for it.

Thank you for the response. Do you hold your employees financially responsible if the items are lost?

Lost items?

by Nyla In reply to

We don't hold our employees financially responsible for lost items if they report it properly to security so that a lost/stolen report can be completed. We've had laptops, cell phones and PDA's reported lost, especially at airports. If anyone does hold their employees responsible, I'd love to hear how they get that policy through legal & HR. thx.

According to the checkout form, we can, but we have not had to exercise that option yet. I think it would be left up to upper mgmt.

We tag & inventory

by Nyla In reply to Tracking PDAs

My company tags and inventories them. We consider a PDA to be a soft of "mini computer" and they're counted as assets despite their low purchase cost.
