Tracking Users accessing Internet

By tarun_g ·
I have a Proxy Server running Proxy 2.0 on a NT4 machine. All my users access the Internet thru' the Proxy Server. I want to be able to track which user is accessing what sites on the Internet. I want to be able to capture, the computer name and thelist of sites this computer accessed during the course of the day, as well as the time spent on the Internet.
Appreciate your help, Rgds - Trent

Just do this by proxy logging. If you enable logging and select all the fields you require it will write them to a file. Just lookup logging in the help file.
Be aware though. You will have *a lot* of information there. Be prepared to sift through huge files for what your looking for.

Jon - I have enabled proxy logging but the log file only gives me the IP addresses of the machines that logged in and the sites they visited. The problem is the machines get new IP addresses everyday. So, it is difficult to pinpoint which machines accessed what sites. Futhermore it does not give information on the duration of time the computer was connected to the Internet.

As far as I know, you won't be able to track by computer name if you're using DHCP. Your logging format is set to Verbose? You should get more information than you want/need. If you're not logging to a SQL database, you can use MSAccess to link to the logs, then add filters so you only see what you need.
There's lots of plug-ins to Proxy Server that can build reports in an array of formats and filters. WebTrends has a pretty good one. It displays a ton of info in HTML format. They have a shareware version you can try: http://www.webtrends.com/products/log/ Symantec has a product for this, too...I think.

I don't know how to accomplish this with windows, but there is a utility that called WinGuardian that will track every page visited, every keystroke typed, and snap a screenshot of the computer activity every few minutes and then send the information to a specified email address. It has several other features for securing Windows access also.
