transfer data between laptop & desktop?

By jazzbo54 ·
i was given a 486 compaq lite elite 4/40C laptop , it has a floppy problem "A\ not accesible" nor can I boot it from DOS emergency floppy-it just ignores the floppy, yet on system-it says device working? its running W 95,has no CD rom, so how can I set up software, exchange data?

can I use a CompactFlash card(type used digital cameras)with a PCMCIA adapter-as just a holder that the CM card fits into and then slides into the PCMCIA slot in the laptop. The OS detects them as a IDE drive - inother words, as a removable hard drive.?
Will this work on such an old 486 laptop? to transfer data between laptop & desktop?

Yes this should work as long as you use this slot only for this purpose. It appears that the previous owner had the laptop configured that way. The only problem is if you try to use the pcmcia slot for something else you may get stuck at a point that you need the floppy to install a driver that is not already on your hard drive.

If you have not loaded a particular driver on the laptop and you need that driver during an installation process you will get stuck because the driver is on the floppy that does not work..

You're definitely in a bit of a bind here as you can't really install new devices (the cards) without loading the drivers...and to load the drivers you need a floppy or a CD. You may be able to use a PCMCIA hard drive, but that's iffy. Since it's a 486 with '95 all the possibilities of a USB solution are unfortunately out.

I assume the laptop does not have a network card installed. Does it have a modem? If that's the case you can try dial up and downloading needed drivers. If so, the next thing I'd get is an external CD-Rom drive. Download the drivers, install the drive, and then use the CD to load what you need. There are PCMCIA drives, scsi, and parallel (yuck) all of which you could use.

If you don't have a modem installed, check and see if the previous owner put the .cab files on the machine. If so, you can connect devices up that have drivers built into the OS. This will probably allow you some older basic modems and network cards. Try to pick one of these devices up on Ebay (should be dirt cheap) or try using a generic driver with whatever you have access to. If you can configure the card/modem, you can then use it to connect and get the drivers you really need.

If you don't have the .cab files, you don't have a modem, you don't have a nic, floppy or CD, you're getting into real muddy water here. You *could* get a 2.5 hd adapter, remove the hd, connect it to a desktop, configure the drive there, put the drivers, cabs etc on it then move it back to your laptop*cringe*....I'm not saying I would...just that you *could*.

This'll be a hassle...maybe more than a 486 laptop is worth.

Anyhow...good luck. Hope this helps.

You'll have to excuse my incredulity here, but you rejected my answer based on the fact that you tried to clean the floppy and it didn't work???

Did you even read the assistance I offered or try the resolutions? I never even mentioned cleaning the floppy drive...since I assumed you would have done that in determining the drive was inoperable.

I don't really care about the points or anything, but I have to admit I'm a bit confused as to why my answer was rejected. I don't think the explanation that the floppy is defective, not dirty pertains to my answer in any way. I enjoy trying to help...but at least like to know why my answer didn't when someone says it was no assistance.
