transfering user data

By jcani4 ·
hi there

i'm trying to transfer user data from a old windows NT4 server to a new NT4 server coping the files is easy to do, but does anyone know how to copy the NTFS shares with them as well, so i don't need to re share the folders on the new server again ?

thanks for your time

For the shares, you can export the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares from the registry and import it into the registry of the new machine. This will reproduce the share name and permissions. As for NTFS, I've used a product called Security Explorer from a company called Small Wonders which will export the NTFS permissions then import them on the new server.

Good luck and don't forget to confirm these work prior to erasing the files on the old server.
